March-April Best Releases

Image

If March was a slow month for good music releases, April was definitely a richer month with many interesting news!

Liars – Mess (Indie Rock, Indie Electronic)

In my opinion, as you could have guessed from my previous posts, this New Yorker band is one of the most creative and changeable bands. Over the years, they made different styles but with a unique touch. Their last work turned more into electronic sounds compared with the previous ones, but, guys, an amazing work (also for their artwork)! For now it’s the best 2014 LP in my opinion. Uncompromising.

Damon Albarn – Everyday Robots (Alternative/Indie Rock, Alternative Pop)

Well i have to say something about him? Beside his career with Blur he made several side-projects (from Gorillaz until The Good, The Bad & The Queen), in my opinion very creative and different from each others. This solo LP is a mix of acoustic and digital sounds, very soft and pleasant company during your busy day. Spacey.

The Faint – Doom Abuse (New Wave, Post Punk, Indie Rock)

I admit i have just discovered this band but i really enjoyed them from the first listening (i hope will be the same for you). Their style is intense and involving. Brash.

Kelis – Food (Alternative R&B)

I know what you are thinking, What? Do you like Kelis? How does she fits into your tastes? I have to admit that i like some rap and R&B artists and she’s one of them. I like her irreverent voice and, obviously, her music! Exuberant.

Eels – The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett (Pop Rock, Indie Rock)

Only 1 year after their previous work, comes out this ‘kinda self-titles’ work. Much more quiet than “Wonderful, Glorious”, you can find nice pop-rock ballads dressed with Everett’s scratched voice. Gentle.

Kaiser Chiefs – Education, Education, Education & War (Pop Rock, Brit Pop, Indie Rock)

Still far from their first 2 works -that still are the best- this LP try to get back to their ‘golden time’ and partially they get to the point. But, you know, when you start with a real amazing product, it’s very difficult to stay high. Volatile.

Squarepusher – Music for Robots EP (Experimental Electronic, IDM)

Looking into the future when we’ll probably be replaced by machines, Squarepusher realized this EP where there are not humans but robots. The style is ‘pure Squarepusher’ in his most experimental way! Complex.

Thievery Corporation – Saudade (Downbeat, Brazilian Pop)

Friends who personally know me will think: ‘you have just travelled to brazil, thats why you like it’. Well, i loved Brazil, but before it, i appreciated Thievery Corporation’s music! This american band always like to explore new sounds, from middle east to south america! i like their ‘chameleonic’ style! Laid-Back.

OFF! – Wasted Years (Punk)

As most of the artists i mentioned today, also OFF! come from USA. After their first self-titled first album, they come back with this nice work, pure punk style, short and irreverent songs. Energetic.

September Best Realeases

Image

As i told you in advance few weeks ago, September was an amazing month (musically speaking), one of the best since i’ve started this blog. Hope you will enjoy!

Arctic Monkeys – AM (Indie Rock)

Fifth work for this british band always on Domino Records like the previous ones. They try to improve the quality of their last -less fortunate- works like Suck It and See and Humbug, but we all know that the quality level of their first work is unreachable. In my opinion this LP is better than the last one. Freewheeling.

MGMT – MGMT (Indie Pop, Indie Electronic, New Psychedelia)

Third work for this amazing NYC band. Probably a little bit less intense than the previous -amazing- work but still very enjoyable. When you listen to them it seems you are in another dimension (one of the best things about music and about the artists creativity). Atmospheric.

TrentemØller – Lost (Electronic, Downbeat)

New interesting work for this talented danish electronic performer. His last work LP was full of remixes, this time he mixed new songs but also with some interesting collaborations (Kazu Makino from Blonde Redhead, like in this video below). Cerebral.

Nine Inch Nails – Hesitation Marks (Alternative Rock, Industrial Rock)

I didn’t really believe Nine Inch Nails were going to retire (even if i went to watch them live for their ‘last’ tour, just in case). After his parallel project involving his wife (How To Destroy Angels), Trent Reznor came back with the original band and this amazing LP.  Intense.

Placebo –Loud Like Love (Alternative Rock, Neo Glam, Punk Pop)

After 4 years from their previous work, Placebo come back with an intense work. They try to go back to their beginning style, but still with an electric (glam) touch, characteristic of their music evolution. Confident.

Goldfrapp – Tales of Us (Alternative/Indie Rock, Electronica)

What to expect from one of the most changeable contemporary artists ? An intense, unique and amazing work. It just depends on which Goldfrapp style do you like more (personally, all of them). Elegant.

Nightmares On Wax –Feelin’ Good (Electronic, Downtempo)

Published on Warp Records, this new work from is very enjoyable. It’s difficult to categorize it in a single style, since they like to mix different ones. Energetic.

Glasvegas – When Tv Turns To Static (Indie Rock)

Third work from this scottish (no they are not from US) band, two years from the previous one. Don’t expect something sophisticated, but easy listening and simple rock songs. Raucous.

Mùm – Smilewound (Indie Electronic, Electronica)

We are getting used of talented artists coming from the little island in the middle of nowhere called Iceland. Somebody would probably dislike their mellow style (perfect for a rainy day, but can be depressing also), but in this new work they also pump up the beat (like in this song i’ve chosen). Reflective.

Clark – Feast/Beast (Electronic)

Published (again) on Warp Records, this double LP of remixes is great. First because he chooses great songs to remix (from Amon Tobin to Nathan Fake), second because of his high quality touch. Quirky.

The Stepkids – Troubadour (Alternative/Indie Rock, Neo Soul)

Coming from Connecticut this interesting band just published their second album that i would define as a nice psychedelic funk work. Trippy.

Chvrches – The Bones of What You Believe (Synth Pop, Indie Electronic)

Debut LP for this scottish band that started their career supporting Passion Pit’s 2012 UK tour. Now they started to ‘walk alone’ and i think they can have a good career.  Exuberant.

See you next month!

April Best Releases

Image

If March was a very interesting month for amazing releases, i cannot say April was boring. Here they are my tips for the month:

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Mosquito (alternative rock, garage punk)

They usually wait 3 years to publish a new LP, this time we had to wait 1 year more! We were very impatient to listen this new work! I can say that it’s less ‘noisy’ and involving than their first work (a real masterpiece) but still a YYY album and their talent is intact. Provocative.

The Knife – Shacking the Habitual (Indie Electronic)

I can tell now already: this double LP is in the top 10 of 2013 releases! After (amazing) Fever Ray solo album we were scared that this project was going to end, but fortunately they worked together again to create this amazing chapter. Disc 1 is pure The Knife style, Disc 2 is instrumental and more experimental. Hypnotic.

Miss Kittin – Calling From the Stars (electro-techno, neo-electro)

Four years after her last work with The Hacker, french DJ/composer/producer,  Caroline Herve comes back with a great release! A double LP very intense and captivating. Cerebral.

Bonobo – The North Borders (downbeat, ambient brackbeat)

New work for the english producer Simon Green published on glorious Ninja Tune records.  Erykah Badu is one of the hosts in this LP. One of the best downbeat representative artists. Freewheeling.

Simian Mobile Disco – Live (alternative dance, electro-techno)

Started as rock/electro band (as Simian) this project is definitely more electro but not less interesting. They became famous for many remixes but also for their original works! They remind me of 2manydj’s (they also started as rock/electro band–>Soulwax) and Justice as similar style. This is a live LP, it can be a good start if you don’t know them.  Confident.

ps i’ve chosen this video both for the song and the video itself obviously! 🙂

!!! – Thr!!!er (alternative dance, alternative/indie rock)

Fifth chapter for this very original band (starting from the name, pronounced ‘chk chk chk’) formed in NYC in mid ’90s . It’s difficult to categorize them in one style since they use many instruments plus they like to mix several genres. You have to ‘try’ them and you won’t be disappointed (especially their debut LP). Irreverent.

Telekinesis –Dormarion (alternative, indie rock)

American songwriter Michael Lerner is the founder of this project.  This last LP in particular is produced by Chris Walla (Death Cub For Cutie producer) and Spoon drummer Jim Eno actively collaborated. Soothing.

See you next month!
